The Nearly Naked Truth this Friday!

Don’t forget, Gilded Lily Burlesque is performing Friday night!  If you’ve come to just one of our sessions, the odds are pretty good someone from Gilded Lily posing.  This is possibly the best burlesque show Alexis and I’ve seen in Baltimore (or anywhere else).  It’s one thing to see Viola, Sable, Paco, Maria, Luna, Lena, or Lucille sit still for a sketchpad, it’s something else entirely to see their art.

The Nearly Naked Truth

Come join Baltimore’s premiere burlesque troupe, Gilded Lily Burlesque, on Friday May 22nd for The Nearly Naked Truth! It’s a nostalgic romp back to the days when men were men and dames were kittens. These lovely ladies (with the help of Paco Fish, outstanding news reporter) will help you navigate the slippery slopes of sex, drugs, plaid pants and communism.

But, don’t get too uptight daddio! After witnessing a spicy shimmy here and a saucy shake there, you’ll be happily sliding down that slope, too! So let Gilded Lily Burlesque reveal to you the Nearly Naked Truth- it’s the American thing to do!

TWO SHOWS! 7:30 and 10:30.
Tickets are $15 and will be available in advance. Watch this space for a link. THIS WILL SELL OUT!

Here’s the event page on Facebook too.

Safety warning for the Mt. Vernon area.

Posted in 21202, Baltimore, Mt. Vernon with tags , , , , , , on May 20, 2009 by anotheraaron

Hey folks, we know a lot of you either live in Mt. Vernon or spend a lot of time there, so we thought you might want a heads-up.

There have been a TON of assaults in the area over the last two months, all on Friday and Saturday nights, all within a few blocks of the Belvedere Hotel and sometimes right in front of it.  They’re happening anywhere from 8 in the evening till three in the morning.

Apparently the assaults are originating from the underage crowd patronizing that new club in the basement of the Belvedere (the one with all the stabbings and shootings).  Both men and women are being attacked in most of the cases by roving groups of underage kids . . . the motive doesn’t appear to be robbery, but instead to just beat every single tooth out of your head.  All the people were jumped from behind before they knew the kids were there.

The rumormill says these attacks are gang initiations but that may just be hysteria.

So if you’re in the Belvedere Hotel / Brewer’s Art area on either of those nights, keep your eyes open.

Here’s a link if you want some dates and names.  (Btw, the title says “Charles Village”, but the club is in Mt. Vernon and that’s where the assaults are taking place.  The article doesn’t list all of them either, btw.)

Lots of great photos and drawings from May 11th’s session with the gorgeous LiiLii Lipstick.  Thank you to LiiLii for being our muse, Dionysus for hosting us, Bill Lindsey for driving us all over the place at the last minute, Jeff for the beautiful photos, and our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books!

I would like to NOT thank Windows for crashing three hundred times while I attempted to put this post together.  Three hours and counting now for just one blog post . . . but no one cares about cranky operating systems, let’s get to the pretty pictures and sketches.

Check out LiiLii’s shoes on this next one.  She held that pose for 5 minutes.  I don’t think I would have made it two, but I’m a wuss.

The above was done by Annika Romeyn.  Check her sketch blog, it’s pretty damn neat.  (There’s another sketch at the end of this post too.)

These next couple are from Brian Dugan . . . (the photo in between is the pose he was drawing for the last one . . . I think)

If you want to see more of Brian’s work, take a look over here.

Next up are a few from Gene Azzam . . . the first one was from a contest incorporating anything starting with the letter “L”.

The next contest probably had the funniest entries I’ve seen in a contest yet.

“Your version of Captain Kirk hitting on LiiLii.”

IMG_3553-1

The one on the left reads, “Please James, you smell like a Ferringi.”  He responds, “You remember I’m captain of the Enterprise, right?”

The one on the right reads, “You know, Miss, Red Shirts don’t live long in space.  Perhaps you should remove it.”

IMG_3555-1

I don’t think folks thought too highly of Kirk’s chances.

IMG_3558-1

“Jim, readings look unfavorable.”

“Spock, I always think there are . . . possibilities.”

We gave away Munnies from Atomic Books in Hampden, watercolors from Artist & Craftsman Supply on 137 W North Ave, and So Good for Little Bunnies from Baby Tattoo Books.  Our next session is June 8th and we’re going to have all new stuff from everyone to give away.  (Baby Tattoo sent a huge box of stuff….I’ll take a picture later this week and put it up later on in the week.)

Next session is June 8th with Viola Van Wilde of Gilded Lily!  No Memorial Day session since we’ll all probably be drunk at someone’s barbecue somewhere.

So no Dr. S this coming Monday…..you know what you should do to make yourself feel better?  You should go see Gilded Lily in The Nearly Naked Truth at Mobtown theater on Friday….half the folks who’ve ever modeled for us are in it, and frankly, it’s the best damn burlesque show we’ve seen them do yet.  It’s FIFTEEN BUCKS.  You know what this would cost in NYC?  It would be THOUSANDS, and I swear this isn’t hyperbole, and I’ll call you a liar if you repeat this, but they’re a lot better than the couple shows I’ve managed to catch up there.  Check’em out.

If you don’t know where Mobtown Theater is, it’s in Meadow Mill about two stops on the light rail up from MICA (the Woodberry stop…big building with a clock tower thing on it).

Here’s a last photo and sketch for you…

So, maybe our ambitious plans to have a session right on the heels of our return from SketchyCon bit us on the butt. Well, bit Alexis, at least. Last Monday was definitely rough, but thank god for our stunning muse of the evening, Sable Sin Cyr.

sable0427

Not only is she jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but she can make amazing costumes–that beautiful costume she’s wearing was created entirely from scratch by Sable herself. And unfortunately Charm City is losing her talent this summer to the land of beer and cheese, where she’ll be studying costume design.

IMG_3186-1

As always, special thanks to Sable, Dionysus for hosting us, our sponsors Atomic Books, Artist & Craftsman Supply, and Baby Tattoo Books. Non-Special thanks to Bill for doing door and Jeff for photos (they aren’t very special, well, not in that way).

There were contests and prizes from our sponsors galore, so many in fact we actually had trouble having enough contests to distribute them all. While we drew, we listened to the Dr. Sketchy’s Old-Timey Dirty Ditties CD put together by Joe Wos of Dr. Sketchy’s Pittsburgh with design by Nicola Black of Dr. Sketchy’s Philadelphia.

One contest was based on Sable’s pose below the fifth track The Bumblebee Invaded The Nudist Colony by Billy Mitchell. You can listen to it below, though Lord knows don’t listen to it at work. :) It’s hysterical. (Let me know if the link doesn’t work.)

The winning sketch of Sable’s encounter with a bee was by Brian Dugan, who won a blue Mini-Munny from Atomic Books.

Another contest was Pirates vs. Ninjas. Why? Why not. (Actually, it was because Sable was telling us about some awesome pirates vs. ninjas blog before the start of the session).

All the contestants won watercolor sets from Artist & Craftsman Supply, but Brian was on a roll and won Gris Grimly’s Wicked Nursery Rhymes from Baby Tattoo Books for his awesome drawing above. (You can see both Gris Grimly and Molly Crabapple sketch at www.sketchtheatre.com)

Our next session is THIS MONDAY, May 8th with LiiLii Lipstick! Drawing and beer on a Monday, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Again, a big thanks to Johnny B for letting us use his awesome photo for our flyer.  See you Monday!

So Alexis and I went to the first ever world-wide Dr. Sketchy’s convention this past weekend for the folks who run the various Dr. Sketchy’s branches. If you attended Monday’s session, you saw Alexis’s hangover and heard the CD made by Joe Wos (the director of Dr. Sketchy’s Pittsburgh and the Toonseum) – both of which were gotten at the convention.
The convention was a great deal of fun and VERY taxing on our livers (thank you, Molly!). Besides copious amounts of alcohol and bar hopping, there were a bunch of seminars filled with a ton of new ideas that we’re going to start implementing over the next couple of weeks and months.

Anyways, a bunch of folks took some really good photos and I thought you might be interested in seeing a couple.

The first night was a Dr. Sketchy’s drawing session for all the folks who run Dr. Sketchy’s but never actually get to DRAW at one. I’d be amazed if you’ve ever seen me pick up a pencil at one of our own sessions. Alexis is able to sneak a sketch in every now and then, but for the most part, it just doesn’t work too well, so this was pretty fun.

Hey look, it’s me….I don’t think I’m drawing though. Probably flipping through the gift bag or something. Alexis up front drawing where she can get a better look (I moved up there a little later when another chair opened up).

I have no idea what was going on in this next one…Molly and John obviously up to no good…

One of the drawing contests was conducted on Johnny Dallas’s front and back….apparently it took forever to scrub this stuff off the next morning.

Afterward, we went to a secret, secret after party at Sutra, a little bar covered with illustrations from the Karma Sutra (though you couldn’t really see them in the dark). All this is somewhat a haze…

And no, I have no idea what we were laughing about.

The next day was a screening of the Dr. Sketchy’s documentary, which will get shown in Baltimore at some point (it’s freaking hysterical), tons of skillshare seminars, screwdrivers, and some amazing cupcakes from Glittle Cupcakes.

Tell me that isn’t the most amazing loft ever. :) Here’s Molly during the presentations.

Well, that’s probably enough photos. If you want to see more, check out the flickr pool.

Thanks so much to Molly Crabapple, our fearless leader, for putting this all together, and thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome . . . if I start listing names, I’m literally going to have to list EVERYONE. We had a great time and have so many ideas now we’re not quite sure what to do with all of them. :)
